Jeff: Hey
me: Hi
Jeff: How's it going?
me: It's going well
Just going through emails
Jeff: Cool. Ready for summer?
me: I suppose
Jeff: Lol
me: The weather is nice now though
No need to rush
Jeff: Lol yea
I'm depressed I had to change my howdy portal password and I really liked my old password. It was BosonHCRisrunnighot=vr30%
me: runnig?
Jeff: Whoops running
me: Julianne said she doesn't understand why you're depressed
Jeff: Lol I am emotionally attached to it. Its a combination of forensic psychology and cosmology
Oh and anthropology
me: Julianne says that maybe you didn't change it and you just want me to break into your account
Jeff: Lol yes that is exactly it
me: Figured
Jeff: Lol
I have my finals next week. I have a three hour math final
Oh but I am being forced to go to a star wars party on Saturday with N Hall people
me: it's not coercion if you go willingly
Jeff: lol yes it is
N adopted me in as their new baker person since the person that currrently bakes is moving
me: Aren't all finals three hours?
That doesn't sound unusual
Jeff: no they usually only an hour if that most take only 30 mins
me: That's not right.
It's a final
Jeff: At least from what i've experience here they are pretty easy
me: It is undergrad, after all.
lol
Jeff: lol yea
but my math professor said in grad school he has to take a five hour final so we have to take a three hour final
me: But you already said it is easy, so what's the big deal?
haha
Three hours is not bad
Jeff: not this class other classes are easy my grade in this class is currently 34
me: Well then I don't think taking the final is going to help at all.
Unless it is worth like 90% of the grade or something
Jeff: well he has a built in curve some where he is still working on it but the final counts for 30% of the grade he says he thinks i will be ok
He said he got bitched at because his class average is too low
me: Maybe if you get a perfect score.
Grade inflation isn't the answer
Jeff: that's what a lot of professors do
me: If people can't make the grade, that's their own damn fault.
Jeff: if the grade distribution isn't right they make it right
me: That's not right
So if you have a class full of lazy people….then you get grade inflation
That makes your degree worth less
It means nothing
Jeff: Well it means they aren't teaching something right if their class grade is too low
me: That's questionable.
There are bad teachers, but there are also bad students
If you really intend on going to grad school, be prepared….they don't inflate your grades.
Rather, your workload is inflated, lol.
Jeff: lol yea i know
me: 3 hour tests are a piece of cake compared to what you have to do in grad school
Jeff: Oh so I started playing the new tomb raider game
me: In grad school….a B- is failing. 3.5 GPA is the minimum.
Jeff: Well it depends on the program I've been told
me: Yeah, some programs you might be able to scrape by with a B-, but others generally want you to have a B or better.
C is failing.
Jeff: yea
So any vacations planned for the summer
me: Nothing explicit. I have a few work trips and we have some travel plans, but we're probably going to play it by ear.
Jeff: Cool
Well I'm going to get going. going to a orchrasra consert
me: k, later
Jeff: later

My Account - Page says it is disabled
And so the email thread begins...
My account when I try to
log on says the account is disabled. After one or two tries, I close the
page and try to log on, and it lets me in to log my hours. Can you check
into this and let me know what I have to do to get my account to not show
disabled?
Thank You

Taboo Recreation
(1:28:37
PM) Me: What are you doing in
your leisure class?
(1:30:40 PM) Jeff: We were learning about taboo recreation such as drugs, lynching, casual sex, gambling . Now we are learning about trends and basically white people make up 90 percent of people that use parks in the US
(1:32:22 PM) Me: lynching????
(1:34:31 PM) Jeff: yes back in the 1800's people would get together and enjoy lynching people. We learned in waco tx about 2,000 people came together to watch a black guy burn on a tree. kids were playing games and they made it like a party. He said back then it was considered to be an american recreation
(1:35:21 PM) Jeff: well social scientist considered it to be an leisure activity
(1:37:03 PM) Me: That is so fucking wrong
(1:37:51 PM) Me: Goddamn racist pigs
(1:39:24 PM) Jeff: yea . its just a sad part of american history
(1:40:40 PM) Me: To put it midly

Happy Valentines Day
(12:28:14
PM) Jeff: how's it going?
(12:50:49 PM) Me: Hey
(12:51:00 PM) Me: Was just eating lunch.
(12:51:15 PM) Jeff: what did you have
(12:52:11 PM) Me: Sweet Italian sausage with noodles and a four cheese cream sauce.
(12:52:23 PM) Jeff: cool
(12:53:47 PM) Jeff: when you were a undergrad did you ever use a system called CPR
(12:54:48 PM) Me: cardiopulmonary resuscitation?
(12:55:01 PM) Jeff: lol no callibrated peer review
(12:55:22 PM) Me: No
(12:55:54 PM) Jeff: ok ok we use it in astronomy and we grade other studedents work and get graded on how well we grade
(12:56:39 PM) Me: I see
(12:57:55 PM) Jeff: I made a 94 but my professor is just going to give me a 100 so my class grade right now is a 100
(12:58:39 PM) Me: Why is he going to give you 100 instead of 94?
(12:59:07 PM) Jeff: just because he can lol i don't know the reasoning behind it
(1:00:07 PM) Me: Seems like you would care more if he decided to give you a 90 or 88 instead of 94.
(1:00:13 PM) Jeff: he said if we made a 70 or above we get 100 if below a 70 a 0
(1:00:32 PM) Me: I see, you didn't mention that before.
(1:00:51 PM) Jeff: he has a weird grading scale.
(1:02:29 PM) Jeff: Im learning lots of cool and fun things in psychology
(1:05:41 PM) Me: Such as?
(1:07:48 PM) Jeff: depression, Unipolar and bi polar , euthymic, cyclothim, diasthymic, and major depression, as well as spent three days talking about suicide. Now we are learning about pain disorders and stomatoform disorders
(1:09:21 PM) Me: I've always felt that suicide is one of the coolest/most fun things to talk about... /sarcasm
ha
(1:09:39 PM) Me: Depression...that's depressing
(1:12:29 PM) Jeff: well it's interesting in the fact that we don't know much about suicide we can't quite understand it. The only real way to study it is to let more people commit suicide but ethics will not let psychologist do that. they have to intervene. We were learnign about electroconvolsive therapy in how it helps snap people out of suicide because it reactivates the part of the brain that wants to live
(1:13:21 PM) Me: Morbid
(1:15:15 PM) Jeff: on valentines day he told us some sad stories from when he worked in the er as an emergency psyc consult and at the end he was like happy valentines day have a great day with this note of suicide
(1:15:38 PM) Me: wtf
(1:16:05 PM) Jeff: I have weird professors this semestter
(1:16:16 PM) Me: Yeah, sounds like it
(1:19:16 PM) Jeff: I do find this stuff interesting though but it's because its my major and i really like learning why people do what they do and how they think . My professor said with this knowlege no we cant diagnose people but we have alot of back ground that we should be able to recognize symptoms in people and know whats going on with them
(1:21:36 PM) Me: Well that's good that you at least find it interesting. The challenge I guess is to become good at it.
(1:25:08 PM) Jeff: yea true . we are learning a about the dsm guidelines but thats it its just a guideline peoples symptoms don't have to follow what the dsm says. so it can be on the difficult side
(12:50:49 PM) Me: Hey

banana hammock monkey nuts
(10:04:10
AM) Robbie: tonight
is going to suck so much banana hammock monkey nuts. I get off work
at 7 and I got to finish my paper for soci about why video games is
good for society and study for a test
(10:06:28 AM) Me: banana hammock?
(10:08:36 AM) Robbie: lol it's a new phrase i made up i know it dont make sense but that's what school doest to you
(10:16:10 AM) Robbie: I am hopping my prof likes my paper. My three main points are that it is used to help people with disabillities such as people with lupus that cant go to the gym they use wii fit at home and its improved their lives. it creates disassociation with is theraputic when used in moderation people use dissociation from reallity in relgious practices as does video games it relieves streess of the real world. and it has education value and improves problem solving cognition and hand eye corrdination

Indeces
me: I would like to point out that indeces is
not a word (though I'm sure you knew this). I noticed that Billy used indeces
instead of indexes or indices. Seems like the
trend is continuing...
(It's just a peeve, that's all)
(It's just a peeve, that's all)
I was looking over Betty's check in
3:06 PM I never had the heart to tell Billy, though.
lol
Keith: Oh, yeah, I saw that, too. We were focused on fixing a bug and
I didn't want to sidetrack her, honestly.
me: Good time to show how the refactoring tool works though!
3:07 PM Haha
Keith: True. I was just going to fix it myself, but I should do it
with her instead.
me: Doing pair programming?
Or are you just helping her here and there?
3:08 PM Keith: Theoretically I'm just supposed to be helping her here and
there, but functionally, it's closer to paired programming based on the amount
of time I've had to spend fixing bugs.
me: :-/
3:09 PM Keith: I'm hoping that things will get better when she gets a new
assignment to code from scratch. Then there won't be any confusion over mixing
old and new code.
3:10 PM I'm going to assign her the new tool,
beginning with her writing a spec based on my description of the program. We'll
see how that goes and then move forward.
me: That sounds like a good idea
3:11 PM Keith: The spec idea was Bubba's. I was just going to write one for
her, but he pointed out that it would be best if she could show some
understanding of what needs to be done.
3:12 PM I know that the new tool will be heavy on libraries
and reference systems, which might be a lot to take in. But that's so much of
what we do that I can't just keep her from diving into it.
3:13 PM me: Yeah, it's hard to avoid
Keith: The upside of our work on the this tool is that it's almost
fully functioning now.
me: That's good news
3:14 PM Keith: It's messy, but produces an output file with what I believe is
valid data.
3:20 PM I think this is going to be a long process. I
was talking to her today, and found that her Java experience does not include threads,
nor has she ever used a debugger with breakpoints before.
3:21 PM me: Did she only teach an intro course or something?
3:22 PM Keith: That's how it seems.
3:23 PM She said that at her old place she always
programmed on a mainframe, typically using C/C++.
She also used Eclipse before, but only for an
intro level C++ course.
me: i see...and version control, has she used that before?
3:24 PM Keith: No, never before last week.
me: Wow
3:25 PM It almost sounds like she's at a sophomore CS
level
3:26 PM Keith: That's basically right. I think she's definitely in over her
head right now.
But her position is not supposed to produce at
only a sophomore level. I can't just give her the same level of tasks as our
student interns.
3:27 PM I mean, think of what Billy was accomplishing
before he left. That's the same work she is supposed to be doing.
